The planning of a Recypark in the Northwest of Brussels has just reached a crucial milestone and is becoming more concrete. In recent days, Bruxelles-Propreté has appointed, following a public tender, a contractor responsible for designing and overseeing the construction of the future Recypark located at the end of Rosalie Uyttenhove Street and Coin de Terre Street in Jette. This new Recypark, which aims to meet significant demand in this area of the Region (Jette, Ganshoren, Berchem Saint Agathe, Koekelberg, Molenbeek, and the City of Brussels), is expected to be completed by 2028.
Following a call for project authors, launched in collaboration with the Bouwmeester Maître Architecte, a decisive step has just been taken that will allow Bruxelles-Propreté to acquire a new regional Recypark.
The first phase involved selecting five candidates, and the second phase was to analyze the proposals submitted by the five groups from the selection. The Agency and its team, composed of architects, engineers, landscape architects, specialists in circular economy, and citizen participation, meticulously examined the projects based on several award criteria expressed in the special specifications.
At the end of the procedure, one offer clearly stood out, which was from two temporarily associated firms, Babini-Geysen (Brussels) and TEN Studio (Switzerland).
The selected project, Nobody Leaves the Party*, is fully aligned with the Agency's desire to preserve and recover as many materials already present on the site as possible. The enhancement of the existing elements in this project was particularly appreciated, as well as the new interventions that open the site to its urban environment, close to a metro station and the railway, and green it. Other strong points of the project include its foundations based on an economy of means and limited interventions that will nevertheless create new functions on the site.
"We are delighted to have won the competition for the design of the future Recypark in Jette, where our title 'Nobody Leaves the Party' reflects the commitment to reuse the existing structures, materials, and components already present on the site. By reintroducing these materials into the value economy, we address challenges such as material shortages and the environmental impact of construction. The project redefines waste as an opportunity, highlighting the creative potential of recycling while raising awareness of material culture and its role in the built environment." - Babini-Geysen and TEN Studio
This new step confirms the ambition of the Agence Bruxelles-Propreté to improve its services to the population and to respond to the demographic evolution of Brussels as well as the usage habits of the regional Recyparks.
In 2024, the Agency recorded an increase in visits of around 6% compared to 2023 (344,700 visits) and counted nearly 364,000 visits across its six sites, with more than 25,000 tons of waste, objects, or materials deposited in the containers.
The planning of the future Recypark is also part of the Brussels Region's action to increase reuse and reduce the amount of incinerated waste. Additionally, the offer of mobile Recyparks has been expanded in partnership between Bruxelles-Propreté and the municipalities.
"After the opening of the Recyparks in Buda and Anderlecht in 2024, I am delighted to see that this next regional Recypark in Jette is on the right track. This project will complete the territorial coverage of Recyparks as envisioned in the Clean.brussels strategy and will offer the people of Brussels a quality site that encourages and promotes sorting and reuse. This new site is an additional step to make the daily lives of the people of Brussels easier, improve their environment, and contribute to the growth of the circular economy in Brussels." - Alain Maron, Minister of Public Cleanliness and Environment
Bruxelles-Propreté is therefore delighted to see the Recypark project in Jette becoming more concrete each day. This new site will contribute, while combating illegal dumping, to a better network of solutions offered to the people of Brussels for disposing of waste that will become resources. This is the key to a circular economy in which the Agency and its teams play an essential role today.
The more you sort, the better we recycle!
