Mandatory Electronic Invoicing in Belgium from January 1, 2026: What You Need to Know

Date

Starting January 1, 2026, electronic invoicing will become mandatory for all Belgian companies. This reform aims to modernize business transactions and strengthen tax transparency. It applies to large corporations, SMEs, and self-employed professionals alike.

Why this requirement?

The main objectives are:

  • Simplify administrative processes: reduce paper usage, limit errors, lower carbon footprint and costs related to printing and archiving.

  • Speed up payments: faster invoice processing, shorter delays, fewer disputes, with the ability to store and access your invoices at any time.

  • Strengthen fraud prevention: through automated and secure tracking.

Who is affected?

All companies established in Belgium will be required to issue and receive invoices in a structured electronic format (for example, via Peppol, the secure network adopted by the authorities). PDF invoices sent by email will no longer be considered compliant.

What are the benefits for your business?

  • Save time and reduce costs linked to manual processing.
  • Better transaction traceability.
  • Compliance with legal requirements, avoiding penalties.
